During a lifetime of avid book collecting and scholarship, Professor Matthews has authored five comprehensive and enjoyable books on book collecting: Collecting Rare Books for Pleasure and Profit,  Booking in the Heartland,  Booking Pleasures,   Memoirs of a Bookman, and Reading Matter: A Rabid Bibliophile's Adventures Among Old and Rare Books; and edited Rare Book Lore: selections from the letters of Ernest J. Wessen. These volumes add to the body of works that describe the peculiar pleasures of bibliomania, and have proven to be guides and inspiration for the budding as well as the seasoned collector.
